Toddlers, Tiaras and Hooplas- Oh My!!!

This required more than just my usual cup of coffee.  It required a double-shot espresso!!  In a nutshell, there   is  all this hoopla over a 4-year-old child dressing up as Dolly Parton.  The outfit, reminiscent of Dolly’s younger   years, came complete with fake breasts and a fake derriere.  Putting aside the fact that I find the show gauche, I   would like to just focus on this one particular issue.

The sexualization of children is totally unacceptable no matter how cute you think your princess is.  Has it even occurred to this mother, that there is a slew of pedophiles just salivating at the mouth every time this child is paraded?  Obviously not, because if the mother thought for just a moment how dire the consequences could be for these stunts, she would stop the madness. Well, I hope so anyway.

Ordinarily, I don’t side with the activist Feminists but given this situation I find myself aligned with them.  They have written open letters to TLC (The Learning Channel, who owns the program) and they have blogged extensively since January when this new season began.  As I am not a devotee of the program, I was unaware that this season has brought out the sexualization of the girls cumulating in the Dolly Parton Hoopla!!  I am speculating that TLC probably encouraged (certainly didn’t discourage) this season’s outrageous overt sexualization, because they new the ratings would shoot up.  It was off my radar screen until I saw the garish commercials pandering this episode and I knew I had to say something.

The short-term consequences of such behavior is the attraction of pedophiles to your daughter like moths to a flame.  However, the long-term consequences are just as dire.  The American Psychological Association Task Force published their findings for the sexualization of little girls and they found that as those children enter their teen years they are much more prone to eating disorders, self-disgust and sexual promiscuity (including teen motherhood).  Additionally, they haven’t got a clue of what is attractive or not attractive because they have lived these fake lives for so long (

Now, given all that, I must tell you that the mother is completely out to lunch.  Also coming from childhood pageant life, she is so caught up in the winning and over- the – top trump cards, that she cannot see the damage.  Perhaps it is because she has the scars and damage from her own pageant life which, in her own words, started when she was 9 months old.  When asked if this Dolly Parton costume went to far she replied, ‘To some people, it’s over the top, to us it’s just what happens… It’s just normal. When she wears the fake boobs and the fake butt, it’s just like extra bonus.’  When your mom thinks that behavior is great, who looks out for you?

Unforunately the more vulgar and disgusting the subject they more it stays in our faces. There is no room for common sense, I agree this show should have never made it past the thought process. People scream about child abuse and yet here it is in full view for the world and they watch and they watch some more and no one lifts a finger, Its disgusting.
